Faculty Responsibilities and Required Practices

Purpose:
This policy outlines the instructional standards and expectations for all professors and instructors teaching within Living the Dream University’s programs. These standards ensure that all students, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, receive equitable, supportive, and effective educational experiences.

Policy Statement:
All faculty members are required to provide instruction that fosters accessibility, inclusion, and student success in alignment with the mission and values of Living the Dream University.

Inclusive Instructional Design

  • Course materials must be created and presented in accessible formats (e.g., clear language, visual supports, alternative text, and simplified layouts).

  • Lessons should use multiple teaching methods, including visual, auditory, and hands-on learning approaches.

Consistent Communication

  • Faculty must communicate expectations clearly and in plain language.

  • All feedback should be constructive, encouraging, and focused on student growth.

  • Instructors must check in regularly with students to ensure understanding and engagement.

Flexible Assessment

  • Professors must follow the Flexible Assessment Policy, allowing students to demonstrate knowledge through assignments, quizzes, or exams.

  • Alternate assessment methods (e.g., oral responses, visual projects, or demonstrations) should be provided when appropriate.

Classroom Support and Environment

  • Maintain a patient, respectful, and supportive online classroom atmosphere at all times.

  • Encourage participation without pressure or judgment.

  • Use positive reinforcement and celebrate progress, regardless of pace.

Collaboration with Support Staff

  • Faculty must coordinate with academic support specialists, counselors, and aides to meet individual student learning plans or accommodations.

  • Any concerns regarding student behavior, attendance, or progress should be reported promptly to the Program Coordinator or Student Support Office.

Professional Development

  • Professors are required to participate in ongoing training related to teaching adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, universal design for learning (UDL), and trauma-informed education.

Individualized Learning Support

  • Faculty should adapt pacing, instructions, and content delivery to meet students’ individual needs.

  • Provide additional explanation, visual examples, or repetition when needed.

Respect for Student Dignity and Autonomy

  • Treat every student with dignity, respect, and equality.

  • Encourage independence, self-advocacy, and decision-making in all learning activities.

Confidentiality and Privacy

  • Faculty must maintain the confidentiality of all student information, including disability documentation and individualized support plans, in compliance with FERPA and institutional policy.

Monitoring and Compliance

  • The Office of Academic Affairs will conduct regular reviews of online classroom practices and student feedback to ensure compliance with these standards.

  • Faculty who fail to meet these expectations may be subject to retraining or disciplinary action as outlined in the Faculty Code of Conduct.
